Den: That's a good name for a band...

As they got older Appleton and Millie were becoming increasingly influenced by what they were hearing on their frequent jaunts to club nights in London. This was creating a division in the band, Howell and Newsome (their band mates) becoming increasingly unhappy at the “dancey” direction Blind were being driven in. When Howell and Newsome inevitably quit, Appleton and Millie pressed the reset button, moving to London permanently and reforming as Nipple Tickle. They were joined by DJ RightStuff (AKA Nathan Wright) who was a leading light in the burgeoning Acid House scene at the time. With Appleton on vocals, as he had been in Blind, the three of them produced several tracks that got popular play in the underground club and rave movement, promoted shamelessly by DJ RightStuff in his own sets in particular. They added a female voice with the arrival into the group of Amanda Butcher and their sound seemed to take a more nuanced turn, though still maintaining the raucous energy they had become synonymous with to that point. When 1988’s “X in Ecstasy” created controversy in the mainstream British press for it’s explicit drug references (though they had done the same in previous tracks and were not alone in this at the time or since) their profile nationally was raised to a new level. Arguably fuelled by this journalistic outrage, X in Ecstasy made it to number 3 in the UK pop charts and lingered in the top 10 for an infeasibly long period of time. When they won an award at the 1989 Smash Hits Poll Winners Party it was clear they had arrived in the mainstream. This success did not sit well with them, indeed it was reported at the time that Millie had head butted Philip Schofield at the after party of that particular event just to demonstrate his antipathy to the whole circus they had become embroiled in. Unable to deal with this success, even through violence towards presenters of children’s tv, Nipple Tickle disbanded soon after. Millie went on to successfully own and manage a string of clubs across the South East while RightStuff continues to DJ, a regular in Ibiza in particular. Butcher continues to sing and record while Appleton, most notably, continued to pursue mainstream success with Naked But For Glasses.
